Our conference theme is: Leading Through Change: Seeking Solutions In An Ever Changing Landscape. We hope that you will consider a variety of ways in which your programs and PK-12 partnerships are seeking innovative new ways to lead your programs into the future, then propose a session to share with your peers. (Additional proposal guidance is available on the submission form.) In addition, the conference will include designated sessions for deans/unit leaders, assessment directors, field experience directors, and certification officers that will provide opportunities for EPP faculty, administrators, and staff and PK-12 personnel to discuss issues and share solutions.

Don’t be Afraid: Leveraging AI to Enhance Student Learning

Keynote Title

The introduction of ChatGPT and other large language models over the past year has taken academic by storm.  Effectively using Large Language Models is likely to become the next essential skill (like using Microsoft Word, Google, or Email) that every college graduate will be expected to know.  Used properly, this tool can be a dynamic and engaging aid in the classroom.  Students can refine ideas, get clarity on a topic that is confusing, get immediate feedback on writing and even play games to hone their study skills.  However, it can also be used to cheat.  It can become a crutch allowing students to bypass needed fundamental learning. Together, we will explore the ethical and unethical uses of this new tool in the classroom.

Learning Objectives.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Interact with ChatAI
  2. Describe ChatAI’s functions and limitations
  3. Implement procedures to curb the temptation to use this tool for academically dishonest reasons and detect when it is used.
  4. Brainstorm methods of using this tool in a productive manner in learning.
